First website hosting guide: from domain name to live site

Step 1: choose and control the domain

Register a domain in an account you can recover and keep the contact information current. The domain is a long-lived business asset, so ownership should not depend on a former employee or an agency account you cannot access.

You can buy the domain and hosting from the same company or separate companies. What matters is knowing who controls each part.

Step 2: create the hosting account

For a conventional first site, shared hosting is usually enough. The hosting provider creates an account that gives your website storage, PHP or other supported runtime features, databases, email tools if included, and a control panel.

Keep the welcome information and know where to sign in before changing DNS.

Step 3: point the domain to the website

The domain must use DNS records or nameservers that ultimately direct visitors to the hosting service. DNS changes can take time to be seen consistently because resolvers cache records.

Make DNS changes deliberately. Email, subdomains and verification records can also live in DNS, so replacing the whole zone without reviewing it can break unrelated services.

Step 4: install or upload the website and enable HTTPS

Install WordPress or upload your website files, connect any required database, and test the site before promoting it. Then make sure the production domain has a valid TLS certificate and that HTTPS is the normal public address.

Test forms and login flows, not only the homepage.

Step 5: create a recovery routine

Before the site becomes important, know how backups work and how you would restore one. Also record domain, DNS, hosting and website administrator access somewhere controlled by the owner.

That turns the first website from a collection of mystery accounts into an asset you can operate.
