Virtualmin vs cPanel: compare control panels by the work you need to do
Virtualmin and cPanel are different control-panel ecosystems for managing domains, websites, mail, databases, certificates, and server/account settings. The decision should consider licence cost, familiarity, migration tooling, server resource footprint, workflow, and whether you are choosing a shared-hosting panel or a panel on a self-managed VPS.
Separate shared-hosting choice from VPS administration
On DotMoose Standard Shared, Virtualmin GPL is included and server administration remains a platform responsibility. A cPanel Shared option is a separate premium placement choice with its own availability/licensing constraints.
On a VPS, either panel sits on a customer-administered server and does not replace OS security/backup responsibilities.
Compare workflow and ecosystem
cPanel has a broad commercial ecosystem and familiar cPanel/WHM workflows; Virtualmin GPL integrates with Webmin and provides domain/web/mail/database management without the same licence fee. Evaluate the tasks your operator actually performs.
Migration tooling differs, and custom server configuration may not map cleanly between panels.
Include licensing and resource footprint
Commercial panel licence cost belongs in monthly TCO. Control panels also run web/mail/database/monitoring/supporting services that consume memory and disk.
Do not select a 2 GB VPS for a paid panel if the provider does not support that combination.
Plan the exit path
Keep domains, DNS, application files, database dumps, mailbox data, certificates, and configuration understandable outside the panel. Test backups/restores and document panel-specific dependencies before a migration is urgent.
